Greener Transportation
We are adding electric-powered vans to our transport fleet, and we are also currently involved in a UK-wide trial of electric cars.
Our drivers are trained not only to operate vehicles effectively, but also to conserve fuel. Fuel usage and emissions from our fleet are monitored regularly and we have invested significantly to reduce overall fuel consumption and emissions (including CO2) through the use of modern, efficient and clean burning engine technologies.
Innovations designed to improve fuel efficiency and cut atmospheric emissions are being investigated - for instance:
- ECO Start Systems which can automatically switch off a vehicle's engine when it is idling and out of gear, and back on again when it is in gear. These achieve a 10% reduction in emissions and save a similar amount in fuel;
Recycling and reducing the level of oil waste through the use of longer life synthetic oils is also a key consideration. Where practicable, we also encourage our people to reduce their journeys by road and air.
